Temples of Kundapura

Shrines of the coast, old as the harbours.

Temples are woven into the daily life of the Kundapura coast. Alongside the great pilgrimage centre of Kollur Mookambika, the taluk holds a constellation of ancient shrines — to Ganesha, Durga, Shiva and the serpent deities — each with its own festival and following.

At Kumbhashi, the hill shrine of Anegudde is dedicated to Lord Ganesha (Vinayaka) and is counted among the seven Mukti Sthala pilgrimage sites of coastal Karnataka. Its annual festival draws large crowds.

Kamalashile

The Brahmi Durgaparameshwari temple at Kamalashile, set on the banks of the Kubja river, is an important Shakti shrine known for its riverside setting and its Ashlesha Bali rituals.

Koteshwara and Maranakatte

Koteshwara is home to the ancient Kotilingeshwara (Shiva) temple, one of the oldest in the region. Maranakatte, on the Souparnika, is famed for its Brahmalingeshwara temple and its enormous annual fair and rathotsava.

Naga and Daiva shrines

Across the villages, smaller shrines to the Naga (serpent) deities and to local Daivas (spirits) reflect the coast's distinctive folk religion, closely tied to Bhuta Kola worship.
